Once you have found a headshot photographer that you want to shoot with and booked your session, what should you do before the session to get ready?
A lot of people are nervous before their actor headshot sessions, after all, this might be your first set of acting headshots, the first time you have had any professional shots taken of you or the first time meeting the photographer and all of these unknowns can make you feel uneasy.
However there are things you can do that will help you feel more comfortable before the big day of the shoot. After booking your session, have a read through all of the information that your headshot photographer has sent through to you. These guides usually contain information about the flow of the headshot session, advice on clothing, hair and makeup as well as any other information that you might need on the day. By having a better understanding of how the shoot is going to go and what you need to bring with you allows you to do some prep work beforehand and feel more confident heading into the session.
I’m a London headshot photographer and so I work with actors at all stages of their careers and so I make sure that the info guide that I give to actors who have booked a headshot session with me is as useful as possible in terms of informing them of what to expect.

I ask all actors to have a think about the type of roles that they want to be cast in as this can then allow us to focus in on certain characters when shooting. Obviously for some people this can be a more open field, especially if they are only just starting out in the acting world, even so, by having an idea in place no matter how broad can help the process of capturing different looks and characters.
There is a difference between photos of yourself and headshot photos of yourself, I believe that everyone can have an awesome photo of them taken but your headshot needs to be more than just a great photo of your face. You have the chance to show off your range as an actor and very subtle changes in, for example, your expression or even how you have moved your head can change everything in a headshot! Its important to be able to show different emotions within your selected shots as this can help the casting director see you in the role more than just a pretty shot of your face, with casting sites such as Spotlight and Mandy it is vital that you can provide not only images with your true likeness, but also a strong range of looks and emotions.
I believe in giving you a large variety of looks when you have a headshot session with me. My goal is to give you a selection of shots that show your range as an actor and most importantly get you seen! Take a look at some more of my work with lots of other actors!
Another thing to think about and prepare before the headshot session is your clothing options, I always ask actors to bring a variety of clothing options as it allow us to make decisions on the day in regards to the lighting setup, backdrop and character looks that you want to achieve. A wide range of colours works well as well as bringing a variety of different style of tops: casual, smart, different necklines, jackets and jumpers. I definitely find that in general plain colours work best and you can use layers and textures of clothing to change the look. The most important thing to remember with clothing though is to bring clothes that you are comfortable in as if you aren’t happy with a certain outfit then you won’t shoot well while wearing it!
Finally before your shoot, remember to leave plenty of time to get to your headshot photographer! It may sound very obvious but if you are getting public transport then always leave extra time as something will inevitably go wrong with the train/bus when you are in a rush, by aiming to be at the studio 10/15 mins before the session should mean that if you are delayed then you won’t miss out on any shooting time during the session!
